Italy is a land of history, elegance and…confusion. As Beppe Severgnini says in La Bella Figura: An Insider’s Guide to the Italian Mind, his country “can have you fuming and then purring in the space of a hundred meters, or the course of ten minutes.”
I was even more intrigued. My elegant and sophisticated friend obviously had a condo in the red light district and, to boot, was waiting for me on a street corner? My travel fatigue and black mood were quickly forgotten; I was on my way.
Later that day, I finally decided to indulge in the quintessential Melaka experience and took my own trishaw ride. Choosing the most garish vehicle I could find, I set off on an hour’s tour of the town with a friendly guide. Stereo booming with Shaggy’s Greatest Hits, I swallowed my embarrassment and sat back in my gaudy carriage.
Take a group of women, get them away from their daily lives, throw in good food and wine, and the odds are it’s going to be amazing. But with more and more women getting together for this kind of travel what makes a girlfriend’s getaway something beyond the ordinary? And where are the best places to go that you may have never considered?

You can have your great debates over what little Italy is the best little Italy (I’ve been to many, and they are ALL wonderful!) You can have your fist fights over New York versus New Haven pizza (I have loyalties here, so I can’t comment). Only, there’s one Little Italy that stands apart.
